Much loved kids book Where The Wild Things Are tops US box office.

The best-loved children's book, which is directed by cult filmmaker Spike Jonze, took an impressive $32.5 million to take home the top spot.

President of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros, Dan Fellman, said, "Tribute must be paid to Spike Jonze, who took a brilliant book and created brilliant film from it."

Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler's vigilante movie Law Abiding Citizen took $21 million to land second place, while sleeper hit horror movie Paranormal Activity dropped from first to third.

Vince Vaughn comedy Couples Retreat was in fourth while The Stepfather rounded out the top five.
