American Gangster blazed through the British and Irish box office last weekend, shooting to the Number One spot in the charts.
The epic story of 70s Harlem crime lord Frank Lucas took £2.5m, boosted by star performances from Oscar-winning actors Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe .
In second was Beowulf, the animated fantasy starring digitally-created versions of Ray Winstone and Angelina Jolie, which took £2.1m.
Ratatouille, the latest creation from masters of animation, Pixar, is still in third, ahead of Stardust and last week's Number One, Good Luck Chuck.
The news for British films was less good, with Elizabeth: The Golden Age slipping to sixth and the dramatisation of Monica Ali's prize-winning Brick Lane entering the chart in tenth, taking less than £200,000 in its first weekend.
