The David Lynch-inspired official poster for the 61st Cannes Film Festival was unveiled at the weekend in the French resort.

The poster was created by French cinema poster artist Pierre Collier in honour of the American offbeat filmmaker.

The event organiser said the poster's design captures a similar tone to that of director Lynch's films.

Lynch's movies have previously been nominated four times for awards at the festival. He won the prestigious Golden Palm award for Best Picture in 1990 for Wild at Heart and best Director for Mulholland Drive in 2001. The Elephant Man and Eraserhead director was also the head judge at the festival in 2002.

The Cannes Film Festival takes place May 14-25.
