Sony Pictures pays up for The Long Good Friday

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Group made a significant purchase at Cannes over the weekend.

The company paid $25 million-$30 million for rights to Paul W.S. Anderson's remake of The Long Good Friday.

The contemporary US remake of the classic 1980 British gangland crime thriller will be written and directed by the Alien Vs Predator man.

The $50m production, which has yet to be cast, updates the Bob Hoskins movie (pictured) and will be set in Miami and shot in the summer of 2008

Anderson previously said about the film: "The Long Good Friday was an astonishing view of 1980’s gangland that shocked audiences with its urban crime and violence. I am delighted to have the opportunity to put a new spin on this classic film which promises to reveal today’s gritty underworld in an equally shocking fashion.”
