Heath Ledger's final performance has had its first screening at Cannes.

Fantasy fable The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which is directed by Terry Gilliam, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday. Reviews so far have been of the mixed variety.

Ledger shot half of the film before he died of an accidental overdose last January. Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all stepped in to take over Ledger's character at different stages of the film. The three actors donated their fees to Ledger's daughter Matilda.

"The obvious choice I made was to close the film down," said Gilliam. "When Heath died I went down to LA and spent the day with the family. We started crying and then we started laughing. I didn't spend a lot of time telling them my plans but they knew that Jude, Johnny and Colin were going to come on board and they were delighted.

"I hope he would be pleased with it. I think he would be," he added.
