Will Smith has signed on to produce and possibly star in a movie about one man's heroic exploits during hurricane Katrina.

The Men In Black star will produce The American Can, which is based on the real life exploits of John Keller. The ex-marine sheltered over 240 people in his five-story apartment building when the natural disaster caused a devastation in New Orleans.

During the five-day ordeal as they waited to be rescued, Keller saw off intruders and looters. When they were eventually rescued, Keller was integral in directing the elderly and handicapped residents to safety through 11 feet of water

"This is the story of an everyday man who became a hero," said Columbia Picture's Doug Belgrad.

"This is the story we want to tell. In the moment of an American tragedy, when we are tested, we find that we have greater depth of spirit and strength that we ever knew."

It's not yet known if Smith will star as Keller, who is dubbed The Can Man. The American Can Company building was where he lived.
