Columbia Pictures have ditched work on Moneyball, which was to have been directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Brad Pitt.

The baseball drama, which is based on a book by Michael Lewis, was due to begin on Monday. However Columbia Pictures' boss Amy Pascal has put the film into "limited turnaround" after she felt that Soderbergh's re-writes of Steven Zaillian's script was too different to her original vision of the film.

Soderbergh and Pitt's representatives are currently trying to find another studio for the project, which tells the tale of a former baseball star who finds success as a coach with a limited budget, reports Variety.

Columbia's decision is somewhat ironic - Pitt dropped out of their recent film State of Play after he felt the subsequent re-writes of the thriller was too different to his vision.
