Hollywood epic Indian Summer, which was to star Cate Blanchett, has been scrapped because of budgetary and script constraints.

The film, which was based on the book Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End Of An Empire, focuses on the last days of Britain's colonial rule in India.

However, the film has been shut down because of budget constraints and a problem with the Indian government's decision not to allow shooting in their country unless the film plays down the romance angle between India's first prime minister and a British official's wife, played by Blanchett.

It's alleged that the wife of the last viceroy of British Indian Empire had an affair with Jasaharial Nehru.

Atonement director Joe Wright said, "We were in between a rock and a hard place.

"The Indian Government wanted us to make less of the love story while the studio wanted us to make more of the love story."
