Kate's leathers are tops

Underworld Evolution enjoyed a bumper first weekend at the US box office.

The vampire sequel starring Kate Beckinsale earned $27.6 million on its way to No.1. well above the $21.8 million the original Underworld took back in 2003. Elsewhere No.2 movie Hoodwinked, an animation based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood pushed basketball drama Glory Road into third position. Queen Latifah rom-com Last Holiday is at No.4 just ahead of gay cowboy drama Brokeback Mountain, which enjoyed a boost thanks to last week's Golden Globes.

It wasn't such good news for Colin Farrell's latest The New World which opened at joint ninth. Terrence Malick's mammoth 17th century epic took just $4.3 million.
