Jason Statham is tipped to star in a remake of classic futuristic-action flick Death Race 2000.
The original film was released in 1975 as Death Race 2000, was directed by Roger Corman and starred David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone.
Now simply called Death Race, it's set in a dystopian future America where an ultra violent road from New York to Los Angeles takes place. One of the ways that drivers score points is by mowing down innocent bystanders using their heavily armed cars. Statham is in talks to play anti-hero Frankenstein (the part originally filled by Carradine).
Made by Universal Pictures, Alien and Resident Evil helmer Paul W.S. Anderson is already on board as both director and scriptwriter, while Hollywood star Tom Cruise will co-produce - although he was originally in line to take Statham's role.
Filming is due to start late this summer: Crank star Statham also starts filming on heist caper The Brazilian Job later this year.
