I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry stars the comedian and Kevin James as a pair of firemen pretending to be a couple to benefit from tax breaks. It just eclipsed Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, taking $34.8m to the fifth wizard adaptation's $32.2m, despite poor reviews.
The musical version of Hairspray, starring a dragged-up John Travolta, came in third. Transformers slipped to fourth, while the animated Ratatouille dropped to fifth.
