Hancock director Peter Berg is to turn his attention to superheroes of a more mythic kind.

The 44-year-old New Yorker is planning a film of Hercules, son of Zeus and a man who could perform heroic deeds the way the rest of us boil an egg.

The film will be based on Steve Moore's comic book stories, Hercules: The Thracian Wars, and will stretch the generally received version of the Greek myth to depict Hercules as a mercenary hired by the King of Thrace to lead the nation into war.

Berg, who's come a long way since the days of indie movie Friday Night Lights, about a small town high school football team, is also slated to direct a remake of the cult classic Dune.
