It was almost a nailed on certainty. As soon as Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. stormed in to town their combined comedic powers were so great that it single-handedly propelled "Tropic Thunder" to the top of the UK Box Office Chart whilst effortlessly fending off the competition. Stiller's mega-budgeted comedy took a startling £2.5 million in its opening weekend to crush its nearest rival. Said rival was none other than "Mamma Mia!" Yes, the ABBA sing-a-long still rests at number 2 after 11 weeks on general release - a feat that's unlikely to be repeated anytime soon. In a relatively slow week for cinema, "The Women" took full advantage of the lack of new entries by climbing one place to number 3 with last week's number 1 "Pineapple Express" falling down to 4.

Holding its ground at 5 is Keira Knightley in "The Duchess". The well-received period romp has amassed some £4.8 million in three weeks on general release. Another climber this week is "The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas". The heart-wrenching holocaust drama jumped two places up to 6 this week courtesy of some strong word of mouth. Faring less well is "RocknRolla" down at 7 - Guy Ritchie's diamond effort slipping four places. Falling one place to 8 is the derisory "Disaster Movie" with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly kicking and screaming their way to 9 alongside fright-fest "The Strangers" at 10.
