Alfred Hitchcock's legendary x-rated thriller The Birds is to be remade with Eastern Promises star Naomi Watts in the leading role.

The film, which was first released in 1960, will be directed by Martin Campbell, best known for his work on Casino Royale. Predictably, however, not everyone is pleased, among them Tippi Hedren, who took the central part in the original.

"A couple of years ago, when they were first thinking about it, they called and asked what I thought about a remake of The Birds," the former model told MTV. "And I thought, 'Why would you do that? Why? I mean, can't we find new stories, new things to do?

"Must you be so insecure that you have to take a film that's a classic, and I think a success, and try to do it over?"

The Birds isn't the first of Hitchcock's films to be remade: Psycho was repeated, shot for shot, by Gus van Zant in 1998.
