Aliens vs Predator: Requiem pounced on the UK box office top spot, taking £1.9m in its opening week.
The digital monster sequel easily outperformed Oscar favourite No Country For Old Men, which came in at second with £1.2m.
The Coen brothers' thriller has eight Oscar nominations and has been praised as the best film of their 24-year career. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, on the other hand, has been widely panned by critics.
These were the only new entries in the top ten, with Hilary Swank rom-com PS I Love You holding on at three and Will Smith's I Am Legend proving durable in fourth.
The political drama Charlie Wilson's War, scripted by Aaron Sorkin of West Wing, slipped to five.
