Sean Penn is in talks to appear alongside Naomi Watts in a film about a betrayed CIA spy, according to Variety.

Watts is playing Valerie Plame in the Doug Liman-directed film and the Oscar-winning Milk star may portray her ex-politician husband Joseph Wilson.

Plame was dismissed from the CIA after 20 years of service after accusing the Bush administration of lying about weapons of mass destruction in her Washington Post column.

The film is based on Plame's memoir Fair Game: My Life As A Spy, My Betrayal By The White House.

In 2002 the politically active Penn spent time in Iraq following US accusations of WMDs in the country and the actor said at the time that war was "avoidable."
