Horror tops US box office

Video game-turned- horror flick Silent Hill replaced comedy spoof Scary Movie 4 as the top choice for North American moviegoers over the weekend, taking $20.2m.

Lord Of The Rings star Sean Bean stars alongside Radha Mitchell, who plays a mother searching for her troubled daughter in a haunted West Virginia mining town. It's been a good week for Bean, who also reprised his former TV role in the UK, playing Napoleonic soldier Sharpe, at the weekend.

The Sentinel, a thriller starring Michael Douglas as a renegade Secret Service agent who must thwart a presidential assassination attempt and Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria, opened at No. 3 while animal cartoons Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006's biggest movie by far) and The Wild completed the Top 5.

Satirical comedy American Dreamz, which blends Pop Idol with Muslim terrorists and stars Hugh Grant, tied at No. 8 with the Denzel Washington thriller Inside Man.

And also new to the Top 10 was Friends With Money - featuring Jennifer Aniston and Frances McDormand. After two weeks in limited release, it jumped five places to No. 10.
