Quentin Tarantino has enjoyed his best box office opening ever after Inglourious Basterds topped the film charts in the US, UK, France, Germany and Australia.

The violent WWII adventure sold over $37.6 million at the US box office, beating Tarantino's previous best - the $25 million that Kill Bill Vol 2 received in 2004.

It comes as welcome relief for Tarantino after his previous film Death Proof in 2007 under performed at the box office. His most successful film so far is Pulp Fiction, which took $107 million overall.

Inglourious Basterds, which stars Brad Pitt, took an extra $27.5 million from its international box office sales.

District 9 and G.I Joe: Rise of the Cobra were second and third respectively in the US chart.
