Madonna arrived at the Tribeca Festival in New York on Thursday for the premiere of I Am Because We Are, her documentary about aids orphans in Malawi.

It was while making the documentary, which she produced, wrote and narrated, that she found a baby, David Banda, who she decided to adopt.

Madonna's interest in the plight of the country came about after meeting a businesswoman, who was born and raised in the African country, through a mutual friend. "She sounded exhausted and on the verge of tears. I asked her how I could help," the singer says in the film.

"I felt embarrassed. I told her I didn't know where Malawi was. She told me to look it up on a map and then she hung up on me," said Madonna.

The charity Raising Malawi, for the country's orphans, resulted.

David Banda has lived with Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie in London since the adoption process began 18 months ago. A final hearing is set for May 15.

I Am Because We Are shows shows footage of David being cared for by a 9-year-old girl with HIV at an orphanage.
