Will Smith is to make a follow-up to his blockbuster hit I Am Legend.

The film, which saw Smith play the last man on earth after a man made virus wiped out the world, made over $584 million worldwide for Warner Bros so it's unsurprising they would want another instalment.

However, anyone who's seen the film will know that there is one major obstacle when it comes to planning a sequel. So, they have decided to make a prequel instead (bravo! Warners, bravo!).

The prequel will chronicle the events that caused the plague. It was suggested in the first film that scientist Robert Neville (Smith) played a part in the making of the virus.

I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence will return on helming duties.
