LA Confidential star cast as Bush's dad

James Cromwell has been cast as George Herbert Walker Bush, former US president and father to the current incumbent, in Oliver Stone's forthcoming biopic, W.

Cromwell is best known as the crooked, murderous police captain Dudley Smith in LA Confidential, a parallel which will doubtless delight the Bush family's many detractors.

The Oscar-winning actress Ellen Burstyn will play former first lady Barbara Bush, thought by many to be the power behind the family throne.

It was announced yesterday that Josh Brolin, maverick hero of the brilliant No Country For Old Men, will play the title role.
