JJ Abrams' Star Trek prequel is starting to take shape with Abrams himself announcing the casting of Mr Spock - the pointy-eared Vulcan science officer from the original TV series and movies.

The young Spock will be played by Zachary Quinto, who's previously been seen in 24's third series and more recently as the main baddie, Sylar, in Heroes - the hit US sci-fi drama. However, Abrams had a further announcement at San Diego's Comic-Con festival with news that sent fans into hysterics - Leonard Nimoy will also be recreating the role for the film.

The movie will be a prequel to the 1960s TV series, returning to the early days and origins of the USS Enterprise and it's crew, including Captain Kirk, Spock and Bones.

The announcement has fuelled rumours amongst Trekkie fans that there could be a 'flash forward' scene - with all the surviving original TV cast members (sadly James Doohan and Deforest Kelley who played Scotty and Bones have both passed away).

No one knows the real truth apart from Abrams and a select few Hollywood movers and shakers, as the script is one of the most closely guarded secrets in Tinseltown and the movie isn't scheduled for release until the end of 2008.
