Here's some news to excite the Trekkies - Clerks director Kevin Smith has seen the upcoming film and said it's out of this world.

Star Trek, which is directed by Lost creator J.J. Abrams, charts the maiden voyage of the Starship Enterprise's new crew Captain Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Chekov and Hank 'Bones' McCoy.

The film stars Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), John Cho (Sulu) Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Karl Urban (Bones). Eric Bana also features as the film's bad guy.

Smith has been one of the lucky ones to have seen a rough cut of the film and was suitably impressed with what he saw.

During a radio conversation in LA on Monday he said, "The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn’t need to be worried–about this film I cannot talk about…It was in very capable hands.

"The director did a phenomenal job–the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead (Pine) is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful.

"He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy."

Star Trek will be released in May 2009.
