Crash director Paul Haggis has quit scientology because of the organisation's "gay bashing".

The Oscar-winning filmmaker has been a member of the controversial religion for 35 years, but feels let down in what he believes is the organisation's anti-gay stance - in particular their refusal to criticise their San Diego branch for backing a ban on gay marriage.

"The church's refusal to denounce the actions of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly. I can think of no other word," wrote Harris in an letter to Scientology spokesman, Tommy Davis.

However, Davis responded calling it a misunderstanding.

"We're all for civil rights and the rights of minorities," he explained.

"We know what it is to be a minority and you have your rights curtailed. We're very vocal in our stance on discrimination against anybody. We take it very seriously."
