"Meet the Spartans" meets the Big Time at the US Box Office

Rather predictably, and depressingly I might add, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer's latest spoof "Meet the Spartans" (and yes that will be a 'rip-roaring' take on the "300" action epic) has stormed right to the top of the US Chart with a $18.7 million opening weekend. That was enough to comfortably knock "Cloverfield" off of its perch (is there no justice in this world?!). Hot on the Spartans' heels is none other than "Rambo". Sylvester Stallone's return as the feared mercenary scooped a respectable $18 million to take the runners-up spot.

Dropping a place down to 3 then is "27 Dresses" - the Katherine Heigl vehicle proving popular with the masses. And stumbling down to 4 is last week's champion, "Cloverfield". The monster hit broke the four-day weekend record upon its release but has suffered a major drop off this week. Another new entry this week is "Untraceable" - this serial killer thriller starring Diane Lane managed to make solid business with an $11 million haul.

Passing the $100 million mark this week is indie comedy smash "Juno" hot off the back of its Oscar noms and sitting rather prettily at 6. And falling like a proverbial bucket full of bricks is "The Bucket List". The maudlin buddy comedy starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman falling four places to 7. A re-entry at 8 is PT Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" - no doubt the Academy giving this one a second wind.

And finally, way down at number 9 is "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" (finally breaking the $200 million dollar mark) and making its way out of the chart at 10 is Katie Holmes' "Mad Money".
