Tom Cruise's WWII thriller Valkyrie has lost out to Oscar hopeful Slumdog Millionaire at the UK box office.

The British film, which is directed by Danny Boyle, took £2.8 million to top the box office chart. Slumdog Millionaire, which is up for ten Oscar nominations, including best film, tells the story of a young man trying to win the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Valkyrie took £1.8 million to come second, while slasher film My Bloody Valentine 3D came third after earning just over £1 million.

Will Smith's Seven Pounds and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans were fourth and fifth respectively.
