Melanie C, the last Spice Girl still making music of any note, releases new single I Want Candy next week, the title track of the British movie of the same name.
You may wonder why the former Spice Girl would cover such a familiar rock'n'roll standard well, the reason is her passion for UK film industry of course.
Mel told us: "I went along to a screening of I Want Candy and really enjoyed it; it's a proper feel-good movie. Of course with it being a British film I was keen to be involved, it's important we support the UK film industry.
Melanie has fond memories of the song which has been released four times by different artists over the past 40 years: "I remember the Bow Wow Wow version from the '80s, I used to dance to it as a child, so I was nervous covering a song that was so familiar. But I was given the opportunity of recording it with Stephen Hague (New Order, Pet Shop Boys), who's a bit of a legend, and he had a great idea to keep it heavy with just drums and brass so I'm really pleased we did it."
Mel's work with Hague has taken her down a different path, she says. "The new album is completely different to the single, it's much softer, and there's a change of pace from the more rock stuff I've done in the past. This is much more vocally challenging."
I Want Candy is out now. Mel's album, This Time, is released April 2.
