A little while ago I had a pleasant chat with Francis Lawrence (then doing the publicity round for "I Am Legend") about a possible "Constantine" sequel. Lawrence seemed very keen to return to the infamous Hellblazer character but this time he wanted to up the ante and make it a 'hard R' - and therefore a truer representation of the comic books.
Despite Lawrence's obvious enthusiasm for any potential sequel it would appear that his ambitions have been dealt a severe body blow with the news today that his leading man Keanu Reeves is decidedly against the idea of reprising his role in any planned "Constantine 2".
Reeves told IESB.net, at the US press junket for his latest film "Street Kings", that there may have been a time when he was considering a return to the character but it's now something that he would not be interested in doing.
Albeit for me to dismiss such bold assertions from Reeves, I have a sneaky feeling that Lawrence may well return to the "Constantine" fold for a whole new reboot. Would it be such a bad thing if Lawrence were to cast a new lead? Answers on a postcard to the usual address.
