Reese Witherspoon's hit movie Legally Blonde is to become a stage musical.
The story of a determined but bubbly blonde who is dumped by her boyfriend, then follows him to Harvard Law School for revenge, only to discover she has more legal savvy than she imagines, is set to premiere in San Francisco in January before opening on Broadway in April 2007.
It's not known if Reese will reprise her role as sorority queen Elle Wood, which won her global attention.
The show will mark the Broadway directorial debut of Jerry Mitchell, who won a 2005 Tony Award for his choreography for the revival of La Cage aux Folles.
"I love the story," Mitchell said Tuesday of his new project. "It's so positive, especially for young girls to believe in themselves. And it's fun to root for a leading character you care about."
No one has yet been cast for the production.
