Caine's despair at British scripts

Michael Caine has stopped starring in British films because the quality of scripts isn't up to his standards.

The legendary actor justified his decision to favour Hollywood movies of late in The Independent.

"All my films would be British films if I got the scripts," he told the newspaper.

"But then the thing is I can't just sit around for 15 years waiting for another Educating Rita," he added, referring to the 1983 British hit written by Willy Russell.

Since his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for The Cider House Rules in 2000, Caine has appeared in a succession of American-funded movies such as Austin Powers: Goldmember, Bewitched and The Weather Man.

The Alfie star recently confirmed on his official website that he will be reprising the role of butler Alfred Pennyworth the forthcoming sequel to Batman Begins, with shooting scheduled to commence in March 2007.
