The Wildcats relentless march to global supremacy gathers apace as "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" has taken the top post at the UK Box Office Chart without breaking a sweat. The third, and final, instalment in the series took a whopping £8.4 million in its opening weekend to crush the opposition and ensure that "High School Musical" was atop the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Some way off of the pace, and debuting at number 2 this week, is Jigsaw and his devilish games. "Saw V", a perennial favourite at the Box Office, could only manage £2.5 million during the same window of release (although on any other week that would have been enough to secure the No. 1 birth). Meanwhile, the Coen Brothers' former Chart topper "Burn After Reading" falls down to 3 under such heavy scrutiny. Another new entry at 4 this week is Ricky Gervais and his inaugural headlining act, "Ghost Town". The supernatural rom-com took an impressive £1.3 million to secure its place in the top half of the Chart.
Down to 5 then is Shia LaBeouf and his "Eagle Eye", the techno thriller just about managing to keep its head above water whilst fending off stiff competition from "Igor" at 6. The spring really has left Anna Faris' "The House Bunny" at 7 with the returns drying up and nowhere to go but down. Similarly the Luc Besson-produced actioner "Taken" continues to slip down the Chart to 8 having quickly bagged itself £6 million in five weeks on general release.
Amazingly, what with the DVD release just around the corner, "Mamma Mia!" continues to rake in the monies at 9. After 16 weeks in the Chart, this ABBA-inspired sing-a-long has grossed nearly £67 million making it the highest grossing film of the year in the UK by some margin! And lastly, down at 10, is Kiefer Sutherland and his fear of "Mirrors".
