Sean Penn's film Into the Wild won the best feature gong at the Gotham Awards this week.
The film, which tells the true story of an adventurer's ill-fated trek to Alaska, was among other independent film winners including Michael Moore's Sicko (best documentary), Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, starring Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Talk to Me starring Don Cheadle.
The annual Gotham Awards are held by the Independent Feature Project who promote independent filmmaking. They are an indication of the top independent movies as we approach the Hollywood awards season.
Moore's Sicko has already been shortlisted for an Academy Award.
