Jennifer Hudson is shelving her musical talents to concentrate on gritty acting in her next project.

The American Idol contestant, who picked up an Oscar for her Dreamgirls performance earlier this year, has signed up to crime drama Winged Creatures. The filmmakers have a double-Oscar whammy, as they've also managed to get Best Oscar winner Forest 'Last King Of Scotland' Whitaker on board too.

The drama is a multi-stranded story about a group of strangers who form a unique relationship with each other after surviving a random shooting at a Los Angeles diner. Hudson will play Whitaker's daughter, without a power ballad in sight.

Cast-wise, Jennifer and Forest are in good company, as their co-stars include Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Embeth Davidtz. Australian director Rowan Woods (Little Fish, Farscape) is helming the project, and filming has already started in LA.
