The bizarre life of media mogul Robert Maxwell is to be made into a Hollywood blockbuster by American Psycho producer Edward R Pressman.

Pressman, whose 70-film career also includes Wall Street and Badlands, has bought the rights to West End stage play Lies Have Been Told, which tells the story of the disgraced press baron who owned The Daily Mirror newspaper in the 1980s.

Maxwell mysteriously drowned in 1991 after apparently falling from his luxury yacht. The official verdict was accidental drowning but there was speculation that he may have committed suicide or even been murdered. After his death it was revealed that Maxwell had stolen millions of pounds from his employees' pension funds to finance his business empire.

After watching the play Pressman commented: "Maxwell's story is Citizen Kane meets Wall Street." He will co-produce the film with one of the play's producers, Dale Djerassi, formerly married to Maxwell's daughter Isabel, The Guardian reported.

But unlike the one-man play, the film will have a full cast, meaning Maxwell's arch-rival, media magnate Rupert Maxwell, and Mirror journalists like Anne Robinson could be portrayed.

And we think larger-than-life screen legend Robert De Niro (pic) would be just perfect in the lead role.
