It would certainly appear that Gerard Butler ("300" and "The Phantom of the Opera") has been bitten by the rom-com bug of late. After starring alongside Hilary Swank in the unapologetically soppy "P.S. I Love You", Butler will lend his acting chops to "The Ugly Truth" alongside Katherine Heigl ("Knocked Up" and the forthcoming "27 Dresses").
For an idea of what we can expect, "The Ugly Truth" sees the return of the creative teams behind the "Legally Blonde" series (i.e. director Robert Luketic and writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith).
This new rom-com property has been billed as a battle of the sexes with Butler playing Mike Alexander, a daytime TV host of a little segment called (yep, you guessed it) "The Ugly Truth" whilst Heigl will play a romantically challenged (feign bemusement here) TV producer who finds herself corralled by her star in to a series of tests to prove his wild theories and help find her love along the way. This sounds a lot like the forgettable "Animal Attraction" starring Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman - we can only hope that "The Ugly Truth" is a much more attractive proposition.
"The Ugly Truth" is scheduled to begin shooting sometime in April.
