Four Weddings and a Funeral was named best British film ever in a poll on Sunday.

The film starring Hugh Grant nervously trying to woo Andie McDowell's character was, seemingly, judged to be better than the likes of Brief Encounter and The 39 Steps, according to a poll of 1000 adults by Virgin Media.

Grant himself came fourth in the best actor poll, with Sir Sean Connery and Sir Anthony Hopkins sharing the top slot, while Dame Judi Dench was named best actress, with more than a third of the vote, ahead of Dame Helen Mirren and Julie Walters

Monty Python's Life of Brian came second to Richard Curtis' rom-com and was followed by Trainspotting, Casino Royale, Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, Lawrence Of Arabia, Withnail And I, Atonement, The Wicker Man and Get Carter.

Dame Judi took nearly a third (29%) of the votes in the best actress poll, more than double that of her nearest rivals Dame Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, both on 14%.
