Charlie And The Chocolate Factory has compounded a poor opening for The Island, keeping the Ewan MacGregor-Scarlett Johansson vehicle from the top of the UK box office, despite opening three weeks previously.
The Johnny Depp-starring version of the Roald Dahl classic took £2.8m, twice as much as The Island on £1.4m. The Island has received lukewarm reviews, faces a plagiarism lawsuit and has been criticised by its own producers for using "non-stars" MacGregor and Johansson in lead roles.
The race relations drama Crash opened at three, and there was a strong showing for Bollywood epic The Rising, which came in ninth despite a restricted opening.
