Dame Julie Andrews has said that the part of Maria in the theatrical version of The Sound Of Music should go to Cameron Diaz.

Andrews, who played the part in the original film, was asked for her choice of actress to play Maria at a question and answer session to mark the 40th anniversary of the classic musical.

The BBC is in "early development talks" with Andrew Lloyd Webber about a theatre version and Webber revealed that he will launch a reality TV show to find an unknown lead for the production. Scarlett Johansson is said to have already turned down the role.

Diaz probably sprung to Andrews's mind as the pair both featured in Shrek 2 where she provided the voice of Queen Lillian, while Diaz voices Princess Fiona.
