Keira Knightley has joined the cast of Silk, an adaptation of Alessandro Baricco's best-selling novel about smuggling.

The British beauty will play Helene in the movie which tells the story of Herve Joncour, a French married silkworm smuggler who operated between Europe and Japan in the 19th Century. Whilst in the Far East he comes across Knightley's Helene, the wife of a Baron with whom he becomes obsessed.

Silk will begin shooting Spring 2006 once Kiera has finished the initial shoot for both Pirates Of The Caribbean sequels.
