Adulthood should probably be renamed the Noel Clarke show, given that he wrote, directed and starred in this gripping sequel to the 2006 cult hit, Kidulthood.
Adulthood follows the adventures of Sam (Noel Clarke), who is released from prison after six years for the murder of Trife. During his 24 hour journey through West London, Sam realises the consequences of his actions, as there are those who seek revenge. Most notably, Trife's best friend, Jay (Adam Deacon) who, in continuing his life of crime, struggles to forgive Sam. In the six period between the two films, Trife's other best friend, Moony (Femi Oyeniran) distances himself from his misguided youth and pursues a law degree.
Adulthood also features the talents of 22 year old ex-Eastender, Scarlett Alice Johnson who plays Sam's new love interest, Lexi. Another treat for audiences is a cameo for actor, Danny Dyer, who (for a change) plays a hard-man, cockney thug.
Clarke wrote the first-draft of the screenplay for Adulthood in just a week, but this really doesn't show. What it may lack in polish it more than makes up for in fizzing, raw and visceral energy. Adulthood is just as good as Kidulthood, if not better.
