DVD Review

It's widely accepted that Ridley Scott's Alien is one of the most important and groundbreaking sci-fi flicks of modern times. Well now Sir Ridley has taken the scissors to his original cut, digitally remastered it and added some three and half minutes of extra footage.

Starring only a small cast (seven people, a cat and the alien itself) this film gave Sigourney Weaver the role that truly made her a star with seasoned professionals Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto and Ian Holm in support. It's easy to underestimate the effect Alien has had on it's genre but it's helped inspire countless projects, including the likes of The Thing and Starship Troopers.

So what are these new scenes? Well the most notable additions are a showdown between Lambert and Ripley, a shot of the Alien hanging upside down just before it grabs Dallas and an extended look at 'The Nest'.

Spawning three sequels (to date), the series is one of the most recognisible filmic genres around (largely thanks to HR Giger's Alien design) and this is a great chance to experience Alien as Scott truly intended it.
