Like his pal George Clooney, Brad Pitt likes roles that prove he's not just a pretty face. But it was brave move taking on the title role in this Western about America's famous outlaw.
Some might have expected nothing but quick draws and bullets flying (hence the initial disappointment upon its cinema release) but, based on Ron Hansen's novel, this film by director Andrew Dominik is a fascinating, lyrical study on obsession, fame and insecurity. And that means a lot more talking than shooting.
Casey Affleck plays Robert Ford, the man who shot the "American Robin Hood" in the back, hence the 'coward' reference. The story's told from his point of view, focussing on the events that led him to the murderous act. He's a man obsessed by the outlaw to the point where he worms his way into his gang. Regardless of what elements can be considered factual, Affleck is brilliantly edgy, suffering magnificently and he makes you believe. Pitt's performance is also commendable as the less talkative but more charismatic man.
Praise has to go to Dominik for framing the film beautifully and putting the focus on character first and foremost.
If you want Gunfight At The OK Coral look elsewhere, but for a story that centres on a notorious outlaw but seeks to reveal much more than what's on the surface, look no further.
