Abrams: Star Wars won't stop me making Star Trek sequels (Exclusive)

JJ Abrams committed to future of franchise and could direct Star Trek 3 - “depending on the time-table".

J.J. Abrams will definitely produce another instalment of ‘Star Trek’, despite his ‘Star Wars: Episode 7’ commitments.

We asked the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ helmer if this was his last ‘Trek’ movie - now that he's directing 'Star Wars' but he said: ‘Well no’.

“If a third film is deemed necessary by the people, we would begin discussions immediately and I and Bad Robot [his production company] would produce that film.”

He also didn’t rule out directing ‘Star Trek 3’, hinting that he still might take the reins if he could fit it around ‘Star Wars’ and into his schedule.

“Depending on the time-table, someone else might direct that film,” he said.

At the very least, it's encouraging that Abrams will stay involved with 'Star Trek' movies for as long as there's an appetite for them.

Despite the enormous job he has with ‘Star Wars’, Abrams seems committed to the franchises he’s helped establish at Paramount - ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’, and won’t abandon that despite working at rival studio Disney for ‘Star Wars’.

“I have a very lucky relationship with [Paramount chiefs] Brad Grey and Rob Moore and they are like my home. We have a number of movies that we’re working on - not just ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’ - that are in development and are poised to be made soon. We’re deep in the trenches.

“They could have reacted negatively to ‘Star Wars’ but were actually wildly supportive encouraging and supporting. The long term experience that we’ve had and will continue to have supersedes any film I go off and do.”

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ is released in the UK on 9 May.
