It was a brilliant night for unexpected wins. While British actress Julie Christie didn’t take home the Best Actress award, French actress Marion Cotillard pleased the crowd with her win for portraying French singer Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose.
It certainly wasn’t all bad news for the Brits; Daniel Day-Lewis took home Best Actor for There Will Be Blood, and Tilda Swinton secured the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award for Michael Clayton. Spanish actor Javier Bardem continued the Euro domination with a win in the Best Actor in a Supporting role category, also for No Country For Old Men.
Just as exciting were the red carpet outfits, with some stars getting it very wrong, and others shinning brightly. Red was definitely the colour to be seen in, and with the weather in LA uncharacteristically wet and windy, it was a good job the striking colours made a comeback! Top Ten Oscar® ContendersCate Blanchett is nominated for two Oscars this year. The Australian actress is pregnant with her second child, but looked blooming marvellous at the SAG Awards in January.
Fellow Aussie, Heath Ledger starred alongside Cate in I'm Not There, which saw the duo chronicle different stages of Bob Dylan's life, alongside Christian Bale and Richard Gere - the film for which Cate has received one of her two nominations.
