Avengers and Silver Linings triumph at MTV Movie Awards

'Avengers Assemble' and 'Silver Linings Playbook' scored the major gongs at the MTV Movie Awards in Culver City, California, last night.

Director Joss Whedon, flanked by Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston, accepted the 'golden popcorn' award for 'Avengers Assemble', which was named Movie of the Year, from Brad Pitt.

Best Female Performance and Best Male Performance went to Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper for their lead roles in David O. Russell's 'Silver Linings Playbook'.

Australian comedy star Rebel Wilson presented the ceremony – and won two gongs herself; one for her Breakthrough Performance in 'Pitch Perfect' and another as part of the Best Musical Performance along with her cast-members from the same film.

Meanwhile, Jamie Foxx scooped the Generation Award, and Will Smith the first ever 'Comic Genius' award, presented to him by 'Game of Thrones' star Peter Dinklage.

There were also, as is customary at the MTV Awards, a few less stuffy categories.

Best Scared-As-Sh*t Performance went to Suraj Sharma for 'Life of Pi', Best WTF Moment to Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson for 'Candieland Gets Smoked' in 'Django Unchained, and Best Fight to 'The Avengers Vs. Loki' in 'Avengers Assemble'.

Finally, the coveted Best Shirtless Performance was won by Taylor Lautner for 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2'.
