Christopher Nolan's Batman prequel rediscovered the darkness of Tim Burton's opening pair in the series, and with it some much-needed artistic credibility after the apparent franchise of the execrable Batman And Robin. Here Christian Bale, fresh from slimming down to wafer-size for The Machinist, pulls on the cape, ably assisted by Michael Caine as faithful butler Alfred.
It commences with the youthful Bruce Wayne dealing with the murder of his parents by channeling his aggression into martial arts, schooled by Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), before returning to the family firm to deal with treacherous Rutger Hauer. Although Batman Begins has moments of light relief, it's far removed from the camp '60s incarnation, and the supporting cast (Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy even the doe-eyed Katie Holmes) maintain the tone of gravitas. As Hollywood action films seem determined to get dumber here's one that just got smarter. Batman Begins is the start of something wonderful.
This double-disc set includes: Inner Demons Comic; Batman, The Journey Begins; Shaping Mind And Body; Batman The Tumbler; Gotham City Rises; Saving Gotham City; Genesis Of The Bat; Confidential Files.
