DVD Review

Will Ferrell plays Jack Wyatt, a thoroughly dislikeable movie actor whose failing career is rapidly stripping him of his star billing. Indicative of the hubristic nature of Hollywood - and director Nora Ephron isn't using this as a pointed postmodern comment - Wyatt believes that a modern remake of the camp '60s TV series Bewitched will see him reclaim his former glory.

Unfortunately he can't find an actress suitable for the role of Samantha, the cute witch with the cute nose. That is until he stumbles across unsuspecting Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman) twitching her nose in an LA bookshop. Bingo! He's found his Samantha.

However, unbeknownst to Wyatt, Isabel is also a witch in real life, setting the scene for innumerable jokes playing on her doubly witchy status.

Ferrell is his usual charming self while Kidman is left to emote, Meg Ryan-style, with nary a cute line in the movie. Acting greats Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine also try their best to work with a pretty uninspired script.

There must be some people who share the director's sense of humour and they will probably appreciate her optional commentary, included among the extras here along with deleted scenes, featurettes, 'fun' facts about the film, set-top trivia game and a short film.
