As a director, Tim Burton has established himself as one of the quirkiest and stylistic filmmakers but recent years have seen him turn far more towards the mainstream. Will this latest offering reinforce his good reputation or is this Big Fish more like the one that got away?
The movie concerns the relationship between Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) and his aging father Ed (Albert Finney) who has been struck down with cancer. Will hasn't spoken to his tall-tale-telling dad since they fell out three years earlier but Bloom Jr. wants the chance to try and find out exactly what kind of man his Dad was. He was denied the chance when growing up thanks to his father's travelling salesman job and obviously exaggerated stories whenever he returned. What follows is a look at Ed's alleged adventures (with Ewan McGregor playing the young man) as Will tries to separate the fact from the fiction.
Despite Ewan's touch-and-go southern accent, Big Fish is a charming, heart-warming and feel good film. It may not be trademark Burton but it proves that he doesn't need to rely on off-kilter visuals to make his mark - he can do it with emotion too.
