Adapted from Neil Simon's semi-autobiographical Broadway play, this Mike Nichols-directed film is set in the 1940s at an army base in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Eugene Jerome (Matthew Broderick) is drafted and sent to basic training at the base. While, having to deal with a rather strange and typically sadistic drill sergeant (Christopher Walken, no less, is perfectly cast), Eugene is determined to come through the tough routine of army life while maintaining his dignity, sanity but, if all goes to plan, certainly not his virginity.

The script is as funny and sharp as you'd expect from the prolific playwright who gave us The Odd Couple and California Suite and it's delivered superbly by the talented cast.
