It seems there are three kinds of horror films now: torture porn, remakes of Japanese ghost stories or comedies, like Shaun Of The Dead. Black Sheep is definitely in the latter category, revolving around the tale of killer sheep in New Zealand.
We're not talking about an accidental nibble from the normally placid creatures here, but full on and out crazed killers following a scientific experiment goes awry (ahh, that old chestnut!).
It might sound ridiculously stupid and you would be spot on if you think it is. But it's also a complete blast - just witness the brilliantly executed scene mocking Hitchcock's The Birds as the sheep began to gather round a country home if you want proof.
It might be heavily influenced by fellow Kiwi Peter Jackson's early work like Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles, but there is no denying the sheer inventiveness on show here.
Okay so it falls away at the end, but you'll be having too much fun to notice. A perfect DVD for a Friday night with friends round and beer (and blood) flowing! Not Baaaaaaa'd!
Extras are your usual fayre: commentary, deleted scenes, a trailer and Making of.
